To deface or not to deface

Had a period when I would highlight practically all the text and then progressed to underlining in pencil so I could erase my markings if needed. My quirk when underlining was that the grammar had to be correct even when you only read the underlined parts (for example, two separate underlined phrases had to be connected by a conjunction or separated by a punctuation mark).

However, I kept my college books pristine in order to preserve their resale value.

Writing on my med books would save so much time compared to jotting down the important stuff in a notebook and resale value is not a consideration because I plan to keep these books...and yet...I just can't bring myself to do it.
